Arrive in Chengdu — Gateway to the Panda
Arrive at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport where your guide and driver are waiting with a warm welcome. Transfer to your elegant 4-star hotel in the heart of Chengdu, the laid-back capital of Sichuan Province. After time to freshen up, enjoy an orientation walk through the lively Chunxi Road district or relax at your hotel. In the evening, gather with your fellow travellers for a welcome dinner featuring an authentic Sichuan hot pot — a bubbling cauldron of fragrant broth, fresh ingredients, and the legendary numbing spice of Sichuan peppercorns. Your guide will brief you on the extraordinary nature adventure ahead.
Chengdu — Giant Panda Breeding Base & Dujiangyan
Rise early for the highlight of your wildlife journey: a visit to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, the world's foremost centre for panda conservation. Arrive in time to see the pandas at their most active, feeding on fresh bamboo and playing in their spacious enclosures. Learn about the remarkable breeding program, the challenges of panda conservation in the wild, and the base's efforts to reintroduce captive-born pandas to their natural habitat. The base also houses red pandas, black swans, and other native species. After lunch, visit the ancient Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a 2,300-year-old engineering marvel that still protects the Chengdu Plain from flooding and provides water for millions. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a testament to the ingenuity of ancient Chinese engineers. Return to Chengdu for an evening at leisure.
Chengdu — Sichuan Cuisine, Jinli Street & Free Time
Today is a cultural immersion in Chengdu's legendary food and lifestyle. Begin with a visit to Jinli Ancient Street, a beautifully restored pedestrian area lined with traditional wooden buildings, red lanterns, and food stalls serving every imaginable Sichuan snack. Sample dan dan noodles, spicy rabbit heads, sugar paintings, and sticky rice cakes. Continue to the People's Park, where locals gather for tea, dancing, and the traditional pastime of ear cleaning. Participate in a tea ceremony at a historic teahouse under the shade of ancient gingko trees. In the afternoon, enjoy a hands-on Sichuan cooking class led by a local chef, learning to prepare classic dishes including mapo tofu, kung pao chicken, and Sichuan-style dumplings. Feast on your creations and enjoy a free evening to explore Chengdu's nightlife.
Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou — Flight to the Valley of Nine Villages
After breakfast, fly from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou, a short but spectacular flight over the Sichuan mountain ranges. Arrive at Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport, one of the highest airports in the world at 3,448 metres above sea level. Transfer to your eco-lodge within the scenic area, a rare privilege that allows you to experience the valley after the day-trippers have departed. After lunch and time to acclimatise to the altitude, take a gentle introductory walk along the lower valley trails, visiting the Mirror Lake and the Pearl Shoal Waterfall. The water here is so clear and vividly coloured that it seems almost unreal — a mesmerising blend of turquoise, emerald, and sapphire. Dinner is served at your lodge, surrounded by the silence of the primeval forest.
Jiuzhaigou — Full Day in the Fairyland Valley
A full day to explore the extraordinary natural wonders of Jiuzhaigou Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site often described as a fairyland on earth. Travel by scenic shuttle bus and on foot along the well-maintained boardwalks that protect the fragile ecosystem. Visit the legendary Five Flower Lake, where ancient fallen trees lie preserved in crystal-clear water of impossible colours. Marvel at the Nuorilang Falls, the widest highland waterfall in China and a filming location for the television series Journey to the West. Continue to the Long Lake, the highest and deepest lake in the valley, surrounded by snow-capped peaks even in summer. Your naturalist guide explains the unique geology, hydrology, and ecology that create this extraordinary palette of colours — the result of calcium carbonate deposits, mineral content, and the reflection of surrounding vegetation. Return to your lodge for dinner and a peaceful evening in the forest.
Jiuzhaigou to Zhangjiajie — Flight to the Avatar Mountains
After a final breakfast in the valley, fly from Jiuzhaigou to Zhangjiajie, the gateway to one of the most surreal landscapes on earth. Arrive in the early afternoon and transfer to your hotel near the national park. After lunch, visit the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and walk the famous Glass Bridge, the world's longest and highest glass-bottom bridge spanning 430 metres across a canyon 300 metres deep. The transparent walkway offers a thrilling perspective of the forested gorge below. For those who prefer, there are also scenic hiking trails along the canyon rim. In the evening, enjoy a dinner of local Tujia ethnic specialities and rest in preparation for tomorrow's full day in the park.
Zhangjiajie — Avatar Mountains, Pillars & Floating Peaks
Today you enter the landscape that inspired James Cameron's Avatar. Board the Bailong Elevator, the world's tallest outdoor lift, carved into the cliff face of a towering sandstone pillar. Ascend in seconds to a plateau of over 3,000 quartzite sandstone pillars, many over 200 metres tall, rising from a sea of subtropical forest. Walk the scenic plank pathways of Yuanjiajie, where the famous Avatar Hallelujah Mountain stands silhouetted against the sky. Continue to Tianzi Mountain for panoramic views of the pillar forest stretching to the horizon. Your guide shares the legends of the Tujia people and the natural forces that sculpted this landscape over 380 million years. After lunch, explore the Ten-Mile Natural Gallery by scenic train, passing through some of the park's most photogenic scenery. The day's images will be nothing short of extraordinary.
Zhangjiajie — Tianmen Mountain & Heaven's Gate
After breakfast, travel to Tianmen Mountain, another of Zhangjiajie's legendary peaks. Ascend by the world's longest cableway, a 7.4-kilometre journey that carries you from the city centre to the summit, crossing deep valleys and dense forest. At the top, walk the glass Skywalk clinging to the cliff face, visit the Tianmen Temple, and hike the plank roads built into the mountainside. The highlight is the Heaven's Gate, a massive natural stone arch formed by a mountain collapse, reached by climbing 999 steep steps or an optional escalator. The views through the arch are nothing short of spiritual. In the afternoon, descend by cable car and enjoy a free evening in Zhangjiajie city to explore the local markets and sample Tujia cuisine.
Zhangjiajie to Shanghai — Flight to the Pearl of the Orient
After breakfast, fly to Shanghai, China's most dynamic and cosmopolitan city. Arrive in the early afternoon and transfer to your hotel in the Bund or French Concession area. After settling in, walk the iconic Bund promenade, where the colonial-era architecture of the early 20th century faces off against the soaring glass towers of Pudong across the Huangpu River. Visit the Shanghai Tower and ascend to the world's highest observation deck for breathtaking 360-degree views. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner in a rooftop restaurant with panoramic skyline views, celebrating the incredible wildlife and nature journey you have experienced over the past nine days. Reflect on the pandas, turquoise lakes, and floating mountains you have witnessed.
Shanghai — Yu Garden & Departure
Begin your final day at Yu Garden, a Ming-dynasty masterpiece in the heart of the Old City. Wander through the classical rockeries, pavilions, and dragon walls surrounding the central pond. Explore the surrounding bazaar for traditional crafts, silk, and tea. After a final lunch of Shanghai specialities, transfer to Shanghai Pudong International Airport for your return flight to the United States. As you journey home, reflect on the extraordinary natural world you have encountered — the beloved pandas of Chengdu, the fairy-tale lakes of Jiuzhaigou, the gravity-defying pillars of Zhangjiajie, and the vibrant energy of Shanghai. These memories of China's wild heart will stay with you forever.
