Arrive in Beijing — Imperial Capital
Arrive at Beijing Capital International Airport where your guide and driver are waiting with a warm welcome. Transfer to your elegant 4-star hotel in the historic Dongcheng district, perfectly positioned for exploring the ancient heart of the city. After time to freshen up, gather with your fellow travellers and guide for a welcome dinner featuring a legendary Peking duck banquet at one of Beijing's most renowned restaurants. Your guide will brief you on the extraordinary journey ahead.
Beijing — Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square & Temple of Heaven
Begin your cultural immersion at Tiananmen Square, the vast heart of modern China that has witnessed pivotal moments in the nation's history. Pass through the Gate of Heavenly Peace into the Forbidden City, the world's largest imperial palace complex and the seat of Chinese power for nearly five centuries. Your expert guide illuminates the lives of Ming and Qing emperors as you explore throne halls, imperial gardens, and the Treasure Gallery. After lunch, visit the Temple of Heaven, a masterpiece of Ming architecture where emperors once prayed for bountiful harvests. Watch locals practising tai chi in the surrounding park before enjoying a traditional tea ceremony in a historic teahouse.
Beijing — Great Wall at Jinshanling
Today you encounter one of the world's greatest engineering marvels. Drive to the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall, far less crowded than Badaling and celebrated among photographers for its dramatic unrestored watchtowers, steep gradients, and sweeping mountain vistas. Take the cable car to the summit and walk along the ancient ramparts, pausing to absorb the breathtaking scenery of rolling ridges stretching to the horizon. Your guide shares stories of the wall's construction, defence, and strategic importance across two millennia. After a picnic lunch on the wall, return to Beijing for an evening at leisure. Stroll through the Wangfujing night market or relax at your hotel.
Beijing to Datong — Yungang Grottoes
Board the high-speed bullet train to Datong, a historic city on the northern frontier that once stood as a gateway between the agricultural Chinese heartland and the nomadic steppe. Arrive in the early afternoon and transfer to your hotel. After lunch, visit the extraordinary Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site carved from sandstone cliffs between the 5th and 6th centuries. Marvel at the 51,000 Buddhist statues ranging from tiny devotional figures to the colossal 17-metre seated Buddha of Cave 5. The blending of Indian, Persian, and Chinese artistic influences here represents a pivotal moment in Asian art history. Return to Datong for a Shanxi-style dinner.
Datong — Hanging Monastery & Wooden Pagoda
Today's excursion is a double-header of architectural miracles. First, the Hanging Monastery of Xuankong, a 1,500-year-old temple perched 75 metres high on a sheer cliff face, supported by a network of wooden stilts and cantilevered beams. Remarkably, it honours Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism simultaneously. After lunch, continue to the Wooden Pagoda of Yingxian, the world's oldest and tallest surviving wooden multi-storey structure at 67 metres. Built in 1056 without a single metal nail, it has withstood earthquakes, lightning, and the passage of a thousand years. Your specialist guide explains the ingenious mortise-and-tenon joinery that gives the pagoda its extraordinary resilience. Return to Datong for the evening.
Datong to Pingyao — Ancient Walled City
Travel by private coach to Pingyao, a journey of approximately four hours through the rolling landscapes of Shanxi Province. Arrive at China's best-preserved ancient walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the layout, architecture, and atmosphere of the Ming dynasty survive virtually intact. Check into your traditional courtyard inn, a charming heritage property within the city walls, and enjoy a lunch of local Shanxi specialities including hand-pulled noodles and aged vinegar. Spend the afternoon wandering the cobbled streets, visiting the Rishengchang Exchange House — China's first bank — and climbing the city wall for panoramic views over the grey-tiled rooftops and ornate courtyard compounds.
Pingyao — City Wall, Ming-Qing Street & Shuanglin Temple
A full day to absorb the timeless atmosphere of Pingyao. Begin with a sunrise walk along the massive city wall, watching the ancient city awaken beneath you. Explore Ming-Qing Street, the city's commercial spine lined with traditional shops, courtyard residences, and ornate guild halls. Visit the County Government Office, a remarkably complete example of a Qing-dynasty administrative complex with its courtrooms, prison, and gardens. In the afternoon, travel to nearby Shuanglin Temple, an extraordinary collection of over 2,000 painted clay sculptures from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The vivid colours and expressive faces of these ancient figures are nothing short of breathtaking. Return to Pingyao for a farewell dinner in your courtyard inn.
Pingyao to Xi'an — Ancient Capital by Bullet Train
After a final breakfast in the courtyard inn, board the high-speed bullet train to Xi'an, covering the distance in just a few hours. Arrive in China's ancient capital, the starting point of the Silk Road and home to more than three thousand years of history. Transfer to your 4-star hotel near the ancient city wall and enjoy a lunch of Xi'an's famous hand-pulled noodles or lamb paomo. This afternoon, visit the Shaanxi History Museum, one of China's finest museums, housing a staggering collection of artefacts from the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang dynasties. In the evening, stroll through the Muslim Quarter, sampling street food and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere.
Xi'an — Terracotta Warriors & Ancient City Wall
Today is a highlight of the entire tour. Drive to the outskirts of Xi'an and enter the vast mausoleum complex of Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor. Your guide explains the astonishing story of how 8,000 life-sized soldiers, horses, and chariots were buried to guard the emperor in the afterlife. Visit the massive Pit 1, where rows of warriors stand in battle formation, as well as Pits 2 and 3, and the excellent museum displaying bronze chariots and weapons. After lunch, return to the city and walk or cycle along the top of Xi'an's magnificent 14th-century city wall, the most complete surviving city fortification in China. In the evening, enjoy a spectacular Tang Dynasty cultural show with a traditional dumpling banquet.
Xi'an to Shanghai — Flight to the Pearl of the Orient
After breakfast, fly to Shanghai, China's most dynamic and cosmopolitan city. Arrive in the early afternoon and transfer to your hotel in the Bund or French Concession area. After settling in, walk the iconic Bund promenade, where the colonial-era architecture of the early 20th century faces off against the soaring glass towers of Pudong across the Huangpu River. Visit the observation deck of the Shanghai Tower for breathtaking 360-degree views. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner in a rooftop restaurant with panoramic skyline views, celebrating the incredible cultural journey you have experienced over the past ten days.
Shanghai — Yu Garden & Departure
Begin your final day at Yu Garden, a Ming-dynasty masterpiece in the heart of the Old City. Wander through the classical rockeries, pavilions, and dragon walls surrounding the central pond. Explore the surrounding bazaar for traditional crafts, silk, and tea. After a final lunch of Shanghai specialities including xiaolongbao soup dumplings, transfer to Shanghai Pudong International Airport for your return flight to the United States. As you journey home, reflect on the extraordinary breadth of China's cultural heritage you have witnessed — from the Great Wall and imperial palaces to ancient grottoes, walled cities, and the silent army of the first emperor. These memories will last a lifetime.
